Best Accommodation in Lanzarote

The current cold spell in the UK has led to a sharp increase in the number of people looking for and booking holidays in the sun. With demand for destinations such as the Canary Islands and Egypt rising as the temperatures fall.

The Canaries offer value sunshine breaks even during the winter months – as they enjoy a semi tropical climate. But these seven islands are all very different and have their own character.

Lanzarote is located right at the eastern end of the chain closest to the coast of Africa. The Sahara desert is just 100 miles away and this soon becomes evident as the island is very arid – with little in the way of trees or vegetation. Making it look a little forbidding from the air.

Once on the ground at Arrecife airport though any reservations are soon dispelled as there is plenty of colour and vegetation in the main resorts as well as in parts of the island in the north. Such as the verdant Valley of 1000 Palms.

The main holiday resorts are also home to most of the best accommodation on the island. Offering an abundance of choice for anyone seeking hotels, apartments or villas in Lanzarote. Usually at very reasonable prices too.

Self catering accommodation accounts for around half of all tourist beds – with Lanzarote hotels taking up the balance. And there are over 200 of these establishments to choose from – with six 5 star hotels and an abundance of good value four star options too.

The island is also ideal for anyone visiting on a tight budget. As there are plenty of apartments in Lanzarote for rent for minimal outlay. Especially in and around the main resort of Puerto del Carmen – which is located just ten minutes away from the main island airport.

Lanzarote has become a popular port of call for cruise ships over the last few years with over 250,000 passengers docking at the island. But the bulk of the visitors still arrive by plane. With around 1.4 million visitor passing through Arrecife airport during the course of 2009.

Whilst Lanzarote is an idea holiday destination at any time of the year the island can be very windy from around March through until late August. So it is best to visit outside of these months – with October and November usually delivering the best possible weather.
